Fifth-seeded Kaia Kanepi has defeated defending champion Flavia Pennetta 6-4, 6-3 in the final of the Palermo Open. Pennetta made a strong start by breaking Kanepi in the first game Sunday, but the Estonian broke back in the sixth game to draw level at 3-3. Kanepi broke again to take a 5-3 lead.
